Blood Pressure Monitoring
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Patients are routinely offered blood pressure checks and if the blood pressure is higher than desired, 150/90 or 140/80 for diabetics, they will be invited for further investigation.
Some patients will be offered ambulatory BP monitoring. This involves having the blood pressure machine fitted at 09:00, wearing it all day and then returning it to the surgery between 17:00 and 17:30 the same day.
Patients who are found to have high blood pressure will receive lifestyle advice relating to diet, alcohol, smoking and exercise. Patients who are started on medication for high blood pressure must be aware that this is most likely to be treatment for life, unless drastic lifestyle changes are necessary.
These medications must be taken every day and must not be discontinued without informing the practice. Untreated high blood pressure can endanger your life.
Controlled high blood pressure should be monitored at the practice every 6 months and requires at least an annual blood test. Uncontrolled blood pressure will be treated more frequently and medication adjusted accordingly.
Child Health Surveillance
This includes developmental assessments as per national guidelines. Childhood immunisations are carried out by the practice nurse by appointment.
All aspects of family planning are available and include oral contraceptives, contraception injection (depo provera) Implanon and coils.
Advice is also available for sexual health.
Post Natal Checks
Examinations are carried out at 8 weeks following delivery. Your baby will be checked at the same time.
Please make a double appointment with the doctor also an appointment with the practice nurse for the baby’s immunisations.
Patients who would like to stop smoking should book an appointment with a Nurse.
At the initial appointment you will discuss your smoking history and your intention to quit. Patients who are not yet ready to quit will be offered advice, literature and a review appointment.
If you are ready to quit, you will be offered a range of products to help. You are also offered support, advice and literature to help guide and support you to succeed in stopping smoking.
You will be required to be seen on a regular basis at the surgery during this period, as this helps build a rapport and offers the opportunity to discuss any issues you may have regarding quitting smoking, you will also gain support, encouragement and advice.
Nail Cutting Services
It is no longer possible to have toenails trimmed and routinely cared for on the NHS. In exceptional cases nails can be treated. Routine nail care is an individual’s responsibility. Nail care can be managed using a long handled file if you find using clippers or scissors difficult. If you or a family member cannot manage your own nail care it is necessary to find a chiropodist or podiatrist to care for your nails. They will charge for this service. It is essential the practitioners are registered with The Health Professionals Council.
